The Most Asked Question
Whether it’s family, friends, coworkers or anyone out there who finds out I have a Stormtrooper uniform, the question I get asked the most is, “Why?” Why do I get into this bulky pile of plastic and trudge around out in public when it’s not Halloween?
It’s basically because of happiness.
There’s this sense of escapism. I climb into this uniform and suddenly I’m transformed into a different persona. From the moment that helmet goes over my head I no longer exist. I have no past. All I am is what the people I meet bring with them inside their head. I have become nostalgic. I’m a living walking memory causing a response in the form of a smile to those who see me. It’s something that I can’t do as myself because I would go unnoticed. But by making myself unnoticed within the costume, I’m noticed and faces light up. It’s a great superpower to have.
I’ve witnessed the moments when eyes grow two times larger while arms and fingers stretch out to point with mouths opening to scream out “Stormtrooper!” in excitement. I’ve laughed inside the helmet as fathers calmly approach to ask for a picture and then rush over, snatch the phone from the picture taker’s hand, and let out a “Yes!” once they see themselves standing next to a Stormtrooper. It’s a never-ending barrage of… “Can I get a picture?” “May I?” “Is it ok if I get a pic?” “Me too?” “Do you have time for another?” … followed by… “Thank you!” “This is so awesome. Thanks” “I appreciate it!” “You’re the best!” I’m able to step away from life for a bit and experience a society that is polite, energetic, excited and appreciative. For me it culminates with a sense of accomplishment and contribution. I see glowing expressions when we meet and depart. That’s happiness!
Wouldn’t you want to go through life creating positive experiences with those you encounter simply by putting on a helmet?
